12 Feb CE Credits Canada
Requirements
CE Credits (Continuing Education Credits) came into effect on February 1, 1995. Under this requirement, every licensed Insurance Agent in Canada is required to:
- Firstly, complete 30 hours of CE Credits every two years; and
- Secondly, keep a proper record of this training for possible review by the OIC.
The CE Credits taken beyond 30 hours within any period of time may not be used to meet the CE Credit requirement for subsequent periods. These hours represent the time that a person actually spends attending a course or program. In the case of correspondence programs, the time that will be recognized as meeting the CE Credit requirement is the number of hours that the course provider indicates, beforehand, that it would take to complete. Reporting of compliance with the CE Credits requirement is integrated with license renewals. Therefore, you must have earned 30 CE Credit hours at time of License renewal.
Moreover, each agent is required to keep an accurate CE Credits record of courses or programs taken for the current and immediately preceding licensing period. Therefore, he or she should obtain from the program provider, a receipt or similar verifying attendance or completion for a specified number of hours. In addition, the OIC may require an agent to submit these records.
Records must include the:
- Firstly, Name of the CE Credit course provider
- Name of the CE Credit course/program
- CE Credit course/program outline
- Date/duration of the CE Credit course/program
- The final mark achieved in the CE Credit course/program, if tests were held; and
- The number of CE Credit hours being awarded and;
- Finally, the CE Credit Accreditation number
Acceptable courses, programs and providers
The OIC does not approve, recommend, or endorse specific courses, programs, or providers. Therefore, It is important that you make certain that the CE Credits provider you are using has accredited their program for your particular need. Professional insurance course providers organize professional development programs for agents.
Points to note for CE Credit course providers
Providers who offer courses or programs that are designed to meet the CE Credits requirement for agents, should ensure that such courses are related to the technical aspects of life insurance. Therefore, the OIC recommends that providers publish, the number of hours that cover the technical aspects of life insurance.
Agents will require a document verifying completion of the number hours they have spent that count towards meeting the CE Credit requirement. Therefore, by maintaining course records for a period of four years, course providers will be able to assist agents by responding to their inquiries.
